AI Pioneers presented at the European Open and Digital Education Week 2024
The recent EDEN EODLW2024 session on “AI and Education: Enhancing Learning and Pedagogy“ brought together experts and educators to explore the ways artificial intelligence is reshaping how we teach and learn. With presentations covering critical aspects like learner agency, ethical considerations, and practical applications of AI in vocational training, participants gained valuable insights into how AI can enhance teaching and support effective learning practices. Each speaker presented research-backed approaches, practical examples, and important questions, sparking meaningful discussions on balancing AI’s risks and benefits with the integrity of pedagogy. The event was moderated by Giedrė Tamoliūnė, who guided the session and facilitated the participant discussion that followed.
The 90-minute session onsisted of three key presentations and an open discussion with participants.
The first speaker, Graham Attwell, opened the session with a presentation on “Learners’ Agency in AI-enhanced Education”, sharing insights into how AI can empower learners and support their autonomy.
This presentation was followed by George Bekiaridis, who discussed “Evaluation of AI Tools: Ethics, Effectiveness, and Impact”, guiding participants through a critical framework for evaluating AI tools in the classroom and considering their ethical implications.
Finally, Ludger Deitmer and Frieda Klaus presented “Application Examples of Artificial Intelligence in Vocational Education and Training”, offering real-world examples of AI in vocational contexts and highlighting AI’s potential to support skill-building and lifelong learning.
These presentations opened the floor to a lively discussion, during which participants raised many important questions, some of which couldn’t be fully addressed due to time constraints. We hope these questions will continue to be explored by both our community and in future events. Share your thoughts on some of the questions that participants posed:
- How does AI bridge the gender inclusion gap?
- What professional development should a VET center provide to prepare teaching staff for an AI-driven future in education?
- Why do students tend to avoid learning processes, and how can teachers encourage students to use AI effectively in their learning?
If you missed the live session or wish to revisit specific topics, the session recording and presentations will be available on the EDEN website soon. We hope this resource will inspire new ideas and foster further conversations on integrating AI thoughtfully in educational settings.
Thank you to everyone who joined us live, and we look forward to continuing the conversation in the upcoming AI Pioneers’ Consultation Webinar on 27th November! Learn more about the Consultation Webinar here.
