The webinar “Rethinking Digital Assessment in the Age of GenAI” hosted by EDEN Digital Learning Europe (EDEN DLE) on March 6th provided a comprehensive exploration of the integration of GenAI into educational assessment practices. As an integral part of the Open Education Week 2024, the session offered a comprehensive exploration of the intersection between digital assessment and GenAI, providing valuable insights and practical applications for educators.
Session moderator Giedrė Tamoliūnė started the webinar with an introduction, setting the context for rethinking digital assessment in the age of GenAI. From there, Orna Farrell, Graham Attwell, and George Bekiaridis – experts in digital education, educational technologies, artificial intelligence, and digital assessment took the stage, each offering unique perspectives on the topic.
First, associate professor Orna Farrell from Dublin City University shared her journey with GenAI, discussing practical applications such as project-based assessments and language teaching. Then, AI Pioneers’ project researcher Graham Attwell from Pontydysgu contextualized the integration of GenAI into education, advocating for more learner-centered assessment practices. Finally, George Bekiaridis, director of Active Citizens Partnership and researcher at the AIPioneers project, introduced the AI Pioneers project and the Supplement to DigCompEdu, outlining skills and competencies of educators related to AI in education and discussed its objectives in integrating AI into adult and vocational education.
Throughout the presentations, speakers covered key themes such as ethical considerations, pedagogical strategies, and the collaborative nature of integrating GenAI into education. The discussion and Q&A segment further enriched the session, offering practical insights into using AI for formative assessments and navigating technological challenges. The webinar concluded with a call for ongoing collaboration to harness the opportunities presented by GenAI while mitigating its educational challenges.
