The use of ChatGPT to create teaching materials at vocational schools
On May 19, 2023, Dr. Ludger Deitmer and Iven Dersch form the University of Bremen (ITB) had the opportunity to discuss possible applications of AI with a computer science teacher from a vocational school, Germany. Using the example of ChatGPT, the seminar demonstrated how exercise sheets can be created and corrected with the help of AI.
It was established that the result of ChatGPT is only as good as the formulated prompts. For example, there is a lack of relevant technical terms if the wording is incorrect and the more complex and specialized the exercise sheet is created, the worse the result of ChatGPT is. In addition, the time required to generate worksheets is classified as high and improvements are necessary in order to achieve one’s own ideas. For precise results, it is advisable to create small sections with ChatGPT, which can then be manually combined into an exercise sheet, for example. AI-supported tools such as ChatGPT are particularly helpful for younger teachers when preparing lessons. However, there has been no ethical debate at vocational schools to date. There is a desire for the use of ChatGPT to be established as a recognized tool, but students should be sensitized by teachers regarding the significance of the results generated by ChatGPT.
